2018 Oscar Predictions: Best Documentary Feature
Documentary becomes easier to nail down as the year wraps up, and that’s because the Academy announces shortlists as time goes on. The most recent shortlist whittled down the competition to just 15 films, all of which are incredibly strong, but the true competition comes down to about half of those.
Films such as Chasing Coral, City of Ghosts and Jane are evidently strong with nominations from the Producers Guild.
Netflix usually pops up in this category, too. In addition to Chasing Coral, the streaming company has Icarus, a film about the Russia sports doping controversy, and Strong Island, the story about the murder of a young Black man, made by that man’s brother.
On another significant topic, Last Men in Aleppo has certainly resonated in ways that City of Ghosts has.
And on the more popular side, Faces Places, co-directed by the adored Agnès Varda, will receive plenty of love.
Beyond that, other contenders could all gain steam as we near closer to announcement of nominations.
Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power has the recognition factor and the subject matter, but it’s definitely one of the weaker received of the bunch. Ex Libris — The New York Public Library is a critical darling, but there’s no guarantee that that will result in a nomination. Ai Weiwei’s name may draw some attention with Human Flow, but the momentum isn’t behind it. And La 92, despite its subject matter, also seems to lack momentum.
Really, it comes down to those first seven. Faces Places and Jane are relatively safe bets. City of Ghosts, with Matthew Heineman, who was nominated for Cartel Land, behind the camera, will likely find a spot. After the DGA nomination, Icarus has jumped into the pack. And, finally, Strong Island looks to be a film that should be recognized.
