2018 Oscar Predictions: Best Production Design

This race is a bit close. The Art Directors Guild gave their fantasy award to Blade Runner 2049 and their period award to The Shape of Water.

However, The Shape of Water also won the BAFTA award, pushing it over Blade Runner 2049 ever so slightly. While the Denis Villeneuve film may be a bit more deserving, its design astoundingly stunning, The Shape of Water would seemingly take some craft award somewhere beyond music when considering Guillermo del Toro’s massive lead in Best Director, and production design is the most likely and perhaps most obvious place to award it.

2018 Oscar Predictions: Best Costume Design

The simple fact that Phantom Thread is about fashion and the lead character is a dress designer whose work is shown off in the film positioned it as the frontrunner before any awards were handed out.

And we’re still sticking with it. It won the BAFTA award for Best Costume Design and, well, it’s about fashion — not to mention, Bridges has won this award recently, for The Artist.

But this race became a bit tricky when Phantom Thread lost the Costume Designers Guild award to The Shape of Water, which was a bit surprising, especially because The Shape of Water doesn’t necessarily stand out as a “costume” kind of movie, at least enough to win. It could, though, steal the award.

I’m going to stick with Phantom Thread though. The Shape of Water feels like a guild-specific win, whereas Phantom Thread feels like a film that the Academy would award.

Box Office Report: ‘It’ feeds on box office, floats to largest horror opening record with $117+ million

Box office tracking once again severely underestimated a film’s potential, with It blowing away initial $50 million predictions to make an estimated $117.15 million this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Other estimates have pushed as far as $125 million.

Not only is this a massive win for the film, but it puts It among the top of the entire year and, in certain categories, of all time. With $117.15 million, It‘s opening weekend will outgross that of Spider-Man: HomecomingWonder WomanThe Fate of the Furious and Logan (not combined). At the moment, the Stephen King adaptation, directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, only stands behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Beauty and the Beast, and should stay in the top 10 openings of 2017 once the year is over.

That number also marks the largest September opening ever by nearly $70 million (and possibly more so if the actuals turn out to be $125+ million) and the largest opening for a horror film ever. It falls just short of the largest R-rated opening, which belongs to Deadpool at $132.4 million.

On merely a $35 million production budget and with upwards of $60 million taken internationally, It has already made it’s money back, and then some. A sequel is in the works, but New Line Cinema (a label of Warner Bros.) will be very comfortable financing the next chapter, and perhaps offering it a larger production budget.

The weekend’s #2 is a sharp fall off from It, as Home Again, the Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy, grossed an estimated $9 million. That marks almost a $110 million difference between first and second place.

After three weekends at the number 1 spot, The Hitman’s Bodyguard falls to #3, taking an estimated $4.85 million. Despite less than favorable critical ratings, the film, made for $30 million, is massively successful.

Wind River continues a very solid run after expanding wide, with its domestic total exceeding $25 million, assuredly making its money back.

Finally, after releasing in every market, Dunkirk will soon wrap up its theatrical run. It stayed in the top 10 this weekend, landing #8 with an estimated $1.95 million. Its $183 million domestic total nears Interstellar‘s $188 million, and has a chance at passing it. The film should also reach $500 million worldwide, currently standing at $492 million, which already distinguishes it as the largest grossing World War II film of all time (not adjusted for inflation).

‘Girls Trip’ crosses $100 million at the domestic box office

Girls Trip, the comedy starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Reginal Hall and Tiffany Haddish, has just crossed $100 million at the domestic box office, making it the first film produced, directed, written and starring African Americans to do so, according to Blackfilm.com. Helmed by Malcolm D. Lee, director of Barbershop: The Next Cut, Undercover Brother and The Best ManGirls Trip has been wildly successful in its run.

Releasing the same weekend as Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, on July 22, the film pulled in a domestic opening of $31.2 million and only dipped 37% in its second weekend.

Rough Night, another all-female comedy from this summer, merely opened to $8 million domestically and finished its North American run at $22 million. According to Box Office Mojo, Girls Trip had a $19 million production budget and Rough Night had a $20 million production budget.

Baywatch, the male driven comedy starring apparent superstars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, was also beaten by Girls Trip. The remake opened to just $18.5 million domestically and left US and Canada theaters at $58 million.

At the moment, Girls Trip sits as the 20th highest domestic grossing film of the year. Other notable films that it has beaten are Ghost in the ShellThe Dark TowerThe Emoji MovieAlien: CovenantThe Mummy and Power Rangers. It should pass Baby Driver, which sits at $100.8 million, and has a chance at passing Fifty Shades Darker, which sits at $114.4 million.

In fact, the current top two domestic grossers of the year are female-led films Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman.

Regina Hall can be seen in Netflix’s Naked, which stars Marlon Wayans and released on the streaming site on August 11.

First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Tiffany Haddish will join Kevin Hart and repair with director Malcolm D. Lee for Night School, which is set to open on September 28, 2018.
